Outlaw Blues

I have attempted to find some way to get quick, nationwide criminal records. I have spoken to several law enforcement officers and investigators, and I can assure you...

There is no national on-line database
for accessing criminal records.

The only way to get information is by calling the state, county or municipality your applicant is from and requesting it manually. This is tedious, time-consuming and expensive. It can also be futile. Thirty out of 50 states do not release this information due to privacy act laws.

You can be sure that this type of criminal check is NOT routinely run on your out-of-state applicants no matter what another screening company may infer. If you make a special request for this information, they will attempt to get it. They may or may not be successful, but you can be sure an additional charge will find its way onto your account!

Research Inc. does have access to  statewide databases available for WA, OR, ID and 27 other states, with more states coming all the time. Remember always use this as SUPPLEMENTAL information.

Always maintain a consistent non-discriminatory standard and treat everybody equally.

Your best line of defense is to thoroughly screen the applicant and carefully document everything. Keep documentation for 3 years.  If you can prove they have not met your criteria, your liability should be limited or nonexistent. Once again, having a predetermined policy of consistent standards can be the key. If you would like a copy of Research Inc.'s Sample Resident Acceptance Policy, click here.

Of course, you should consult your attorney and get a qualified legal opinion before making any final decisions.
